Dynamic,
Contemporary, and Uniquely South
Asian: ArtWallah 2002
The
Third Annual Festival of the South
Asian Diaspora
As sunlight filtered through the
delicate, multi-colored kites fashioned
by volunteers and organizers, attendees
of ArtWallah 2002 (April 26-28)
were welcomed into the Village at
Ed Gould Plaza’s festive courtyard.
Gurpreet
Chana remembers leaning how to drum
before he learned how to walk. He
recalls trying to keep a beat on
the coffee table in his grandfather’s
living room when he was barely big
enough to see over it. “I
started playing when I was really
young and my parents took me for
a lesson. I’ve never looked
back since then,” says Chana,
now a 24 year old mechanical engineer
from Mississauga.
If you
or I had been found banging dents
in the coffee table when we were
three years old, dada abba would
have given us jutiyaan for lunch.
Kesar Singh Chana gave his grandson
Gurpreet a set of premium quality
Gerrard Street tablas.
